Wish was the first Cure album to be released while I was already a fan. It was also on the Wish tour that I first got to see them live, so I have some very fond memories of a lot of tracks on this album. And I've also found myself getting into it a lot in the last few weeks too. Whereas before it always sounded a bit disjointed, i think I've come to appreciate the 'ebb and flow' effect of having High, Doing The Unstuck and Friday I'm In Love on the same album as Trust, To Wish Impossible Things and Apart. From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea remains one of their most powerful songs to date, and the bit in the middle where it goes all quiet and Robert sings "..the something we will always want" still gives me goosebumps now. And the closing trio of Cut, To Wish Impossible Things and End is as perfect a way to finish an album as possible. Cut is a fantastic wah-wah fest (air guitar comes out a lot to that one!), To Wish Impossible Things can still make me cry, and End is a glorious cocophony of looped beats, sampled vocal trails and anguish. I don't really listen to the poppy stuff at home, but I still love it when I hear High or Friday I'm In Love when I'm in the pub or at a party, and to finish, I think A Letter To Elise is one of the best lyrics Robert has ever written...

This was out just before I went off them for a while, I bought it and it went to number one and...I dunno, I like the faster and heavier tracks but I was going in different directions, trying to fit in a bit more as I'd spent a lot of time on the outside looking in and things hadn't worked out too well. It wasn't until WMS came out that I really got back in to them in a big way.

a letter to elise is without out a doubt the best lyric robert's ever done. i've said this before too, but it came out at a time in my life when i was going through basically what the song is about, and of course, not many people get to hear what it's like for robert to say their name (oh that sounds so naughty!) we must be on the same wavelength dandy, because i've been listening to wish a lot lately, and i think it really is my favorite. to wish impossible things is the perfect song, actually, the whole album is. the melody fits perfect with the lyrics. apart is my current fav. sad song, and really gets to me. i think open is the best opener, and of course end is the best ender (please stop loving me, i am none of these things!) trust is gorgeous.

I agree, the closing trio is simply the best EVER.
Wish was my first CD, as I've mentioned, and it's very dear to me. I think it's safe to say that Apart is the song that really started it. It got inside my head... it made me lament right along with him. Pretty much, only the first three songs worked for awhile, so I listened to Apart over and over and over and over again.
From the three songs (and half of four), I was introduced to the many sides of The Cure. From the happy little noises in High to the whispers in Apart to the desperation of Open to the wailing guitar riffs in FtEotDGS... I could tell that good things were about to happen...

Worth mentioning that I saw them at Porstmouth Guildhall on the small venue tour and was right down the front for Cut and End, which is as loud as I've ever heard anyone!

that would be LOUD! (hope you had earplugs) I was in the front row both nights on the wish tour, but they played a large stadium here. (it was still amazing- especially 'from the edge of the deep green sea.' plus, we thought they weren't coming back after the prayer tour, so it was all a happy surprise!)
my best memory of 'wish' is going to the store with my friends at midnight on the day it was released. a bunch of other people were waiting, too, so they let us in a few minutes early. when 'open' started to play over the store's sound system, those first guitar sounds gave me chills! so easily identified as the cure, but something new and very, very good...
as an album, 'wish' was the perfect follow-up to disintegration (let's pretend 'mixed up' never happened). top-notch writing, the band playing in their prime, and a stellar recording- what a way to follow up a masterpiece...
oh- and the b-sides were better than most bands' best songs!

Ah, you're little story about the first guitar sounds giving you chills gave ME chills.
Ahhhh, the Wish b-sides! WONDERFUL. Our namesake, of course, is a beautiful song. And Mr. Robert himself seems to have a soft spot for it and all.
Maybe someday I'll get another copy of Wish and hang this one back on the wall, as a sort of trophy or memorial or... something. But then again, good music isn't for hanging on the wall...
