It gets a lot of bad press as being the trippy, drug-fucked album, but I think it's one of their best ones. Shake Dog Shake is another of those great 'first track' songs, that just sets the mood up perfectly despite not really sounding like anything else on the album. Bird Mad Girl is probably one of Robert's loopiest lyrics, but you can hear those pop sensibilities trying to break out underneath (and maybe I'm alone on this one but I think it would've made a better single than Caterpillar). The Wailing Wall is all Eastern atmosphere (not unlike the Banshee's Israel, but they were both inspired by the same touring experience), and Give Me It is a ball of anger, with it's violent lyrics and even more violent drumming. I love the military-style rhythm to The Empty World, and Bananafishbones is a glorious mess, very dense and messy but somehow great at the same time. And The Top (the song) is a great way to finish it all off, if a little despairing ("This top is the place, where nobody goes, you just imagine, you just imagine it all") And it's also got Dressing Up and Piggy in The Mirror on it too! What more do you people want?!
(In fact, Caterpillar is probably the only song on it that I don't really like)

as this is the one album i don't have, i can't wait for the remaster. shake dog shake, caterpillar, and dressing up are the only songs i've heard (well, okay, give me it, but i keep skipping it on concert ). dressing up, to me, is the best, i can't get enough of it. ha ha, sds really is terrific, i love the melody, the words, the feeling, everything.

are you sure the store owner didn't have the actual cd's hidden someplace else? i know at the used shop i go too, the cd's that are on the counter aren't protected, so the cases are empty, and when you buy the cd, they get the discs from behind the counter

and leo, dont worry, Give Me It is far better on The Top than on Concert, the sound isn't as 'muddy'...

This is the time I would have loved to have been into the cure as I was old enough by then to be aware, but it took me another four years. Very psychedelic. Love the hair but as a whole it seems to fall a bit short. It;s Shake Dog Shake, Give Me it and the Caterpillar that Stand Out. The production is a it too sharp too. It needs to be a bit more chaotic.

I don't have The Top yet . Hopefully working on that soon. The only song that I'm really familiar with is The Caterpillar, and I personally think it's brilliant and wonderful to sing along to all extra loud...

Haha. I have those on Concert, but I haven't given them much of a listen... I'm sure a day will come when I'll discover them, and shout to nothing but for a few days.

Do you have an A&B Sound where you are? Just ask and they should be able to order a copy in for you. I'm going to do that next time I go in.

Cd hunting in pawn shops and old record stores is fun! make a weekend day of it. i do. and i usually see lots of crash test dummies stuff. it's really funny to see how many copies of "god shuffled his feet" in a box. ;D
