back to the topic, I just started reading 'blink,' by malcolm gladwell. it's about how people make some snap judgements that are very often more accurate than decisions made after long deliberation. haven't gotten too far into it, but so far it's really interesting!

Now is that simply a snap judgement or is the book really that good?

Well, I'm learning a bit about various folks that have shaped Ireland culturally and historically... nothing in depth, but it's already making me want to go read more books, which can only be a good thing!

well, this isn't reading but whatever. i've gotten into the habit of putting the radio on the talk stations (so i'm not distracted by music while trying to sleep) okay the real reason is they broadcast the bbc worldservice from 12-5 (my time) and its fun to listen. anyways, this am, they were talking about the possible closing of the car plant in rover (or some place like that) and this guy called in and was saying that britain had no real industry, so if this plant closes they'll have like, tourism to support them. and the guys on the program finally just cut him and was like okay, that's enough. we provide services etc etc. it was kinda funny. but not really unemployment sucks. oh so, new language question. would you rather be "laid off" or "made redundant?"

I have just belatedly read Tony Parsons' Man And Boy and it made me cry several times (though to be fair I would shed tears at a shopping list at the moment). I'm not much of one for proper literature so Parsons, Bill Bryson, Nick Hornby, Tony Hawks (the comedian, not the skate board man) all do me fine. And Douglas Adams of course.
I also have read a few Iain Banks, recommend The Wasp Factory and Walking On Glass in particular.
Actually, I don't know if anyone has read Pete McArthy's books (about his irish ancestry, generally) but I read McArthy's Bar, then saw him in the street in Chichester, then he died! Not there and then, a few months later, but still!
Linking back to the Cure, I have read a couple of Camus' works, including The Outsider (L'etranger?) and I think I've followed them and sort of understood, but I'm not really sure I'm clever enough to know whether I've missed the point or not.
