Ah, the album that soundtracked all my adolescent angst. Probably the album with the most appropriate artwork, as a huge sense of gloom pervades through almost every track. This is a strange one for me, because although I really like the album, I can find it hard going (mostly for similar reasons to what the band were going through when it was written). The Holt Hour has that great Gallup bass sound, and when I do start learning bass, that intro will probably be the first thing I learn! Primary is great, and still sounds brilliant live now. The Drowning Man and Faith work so well together, and I'd love to see them do those two songs live together. Faith especially, as I've never seen them do that one live, and every live version I've heard has been mesmerising. A lot of the other songs I find really hard to be objective about, because there are a huge amount of personal memories tied up in them, but All Cats Are Grey still stands as a monolith of despair all these years later. (Very) uneasy listening.

faith was the first 'old' one i bought, and it was kind of a shock. i just had no idea, but it make por.no make more sense (as far as sound, style, etc). everyone knows my gripes with this album, i just can't hear him and it ruins the whole thing for me. i hope the remaster sounds better. the drowning man, the funeral party, all cats are grey are my favs, and i love primary on concert. other voices is another good one. you guys will stop talking to me after this, but faith, the song? i feel nu-thing. am i that empty? i'm not sure, but it just feels like another song. i think it's just cause i can't hear him, so i just can't get the feeling. i don't know, this is actually my least favorite album of all (even less than hotd). commence chastising

If I remember rightly this was the second one I bought after Jap but I'd also heard Kiss Me and Standing on a Beach. I really wanted to like it because I fancied the Cure girl from school so I always thought it was great. I actually think the fast songs are the weakest on the album. I also prefer side 2, it is more wistful.

I love listening to it when i'm down, it's the perfect soudtrack for those what the hell am I doing here? moods. It's very melloncollie and fits the moment. Mind you it will be great to hear it cleaned up on the remasters!

The Drowning Man and Faith work so well together, and I'd love to see them do those two songs live together. Don't I just feel like a lucky girl? I was talking to this lovely British fellow online the other day (and when I say lovely, I mean LOVELY), and I mentioned that I got to go to the Everett rescheduled concert, and he said, "oh, so you got to see Drowning Man!" And Faith live WAS amazing, chills and all, but it didn't strike me quite the way I thought it would. Bloodflowers got the reaction I'd imagined Faith would... I don't have Faith yet because I've heard most of the songs and I'm waiting for the remaster to come out... but Faith the song is perfect for those sad, lonely nights when everything seems lost.

the perfect rainy-day-mellow album. just downbeat and grey- not bloodthirsty/angry, not black despair... just sort of a persistent questioning, like falling rain.
I love the repetitive beats, the guitar textures, and although I know leo hates it, I actually like the way his voice is mixed (sorry leo, ducking as I type!). it becomes part of the musical texture instead of a lyrical line on top of the music. to me, that gives it a church-like feel, where the words are hard to distinguish, but everyone knows them anyway (like a recitation). that said, bring on the remaster! heh!
I do find it difficult to listen to, but for technical reasons. the bass sound is incredible, but it's so powerful in the mix that it needs really good speakers to reproduce it. I can't really listen to it in the car because it makes the dashboard rattle! ;D

well i know I said it earlier, but I've had to re-evaluate this one since the remaster came out... it still carries the same memories, the songs haven't changed in any way, but it's like a fog has lifted, or someone's taken a damp towel off the speakers... the air of sludgyness has gone, and tracks like The Holy Hour, All Cats Are Grey and The Drowning Man flourish because of it... it's still a very 'grey' album, but it somehow makes more sense now...
