I'm against animal testing for cosmetics and household items, I never buy anything that has been tested on an animal if I can help it. Most probucts I use are Saint Ives cause they don't do animal testing on any product. If you've ever seen pictures of what they do to animals you would never want to touch another lipstick. Sept for Body Shop or Mary Kay, or Avon cause they're cruelity free! In the past, the toxicity of a new substance was measured by an 'LD50' (lethal dose 50%) test. This test required up to 200 rats, dogs or other animals to be force-fed different amounts of the substance, to determine the dose that would kill exactly half that group of animals. There are actually other ways to do scientific testing that do not require animals. The use of cell cultures is quite common now. If your interested here is a BBC web page about pros and cons of animal testing. It also discusses the alternitives to testing on animals: www.bbc.co.uk/science/hottopics/animalexperiments/Not jumping on a soap box or anyting but after having so many pets in my life I feel rather strongly about the subject...and the first time I saw the movie The Plague Dogs I actualy held my dog and cried for almost an hour. (Now I'm getting embarrased, but it was a very sad and dusturbing movie that really affected me.)
